Arnold Schwarzenegger visiting India to explore biz opportunites

Rollover Bill Clinton. India may soon get a Hollywood movie star as brand ambassador. And this one heads one of America's richest states too. Thanks to the efforts of Indian-American IT honchos in Silicon Valley- including Raj Jaswa, Kanwal Rekhi, Sanjay Subhedar, Kumar Malavalli, Prmod Haque, Naren Gupta and Romesh Wadhwani—the Indian cities will play host to Californian 'governor' Arnold Schwarzenegger early next year.

Even as the ‘governor’ himself gives Californians his favorite one-liner 'I’ll be back' in his campaign for re-election this November, his trade office is busy preparing for the five-day, multi-city trip to India in February-March 2007 with a business delegation.

It started with the TiECon Conference in Silicon Valley last May, where Schwarzenegger was a speaker. "The governor showed an interest in visiting India to look at opportunities for business partnerships between the two regions. We felt that this would be very good for India, given California’s leadership position as one of the world’s biggest economies," Bay Area VC, entrepreneur and TiE Silicon Valley president Raj Jaswa, told ET.

The governor announced the trade mission at a gathering of Indian American business leaders at Jaswa’s house in the valley recently.

Even though most of the prominent entrepreneurs of Indian origin in California’s Bay Area are from IT sector, hi-tech may just end up taking a back seat during the gubernatorial visit. "California is in a leadership position in diverse industries and we are looking at business opportunities being explored between the two regions in areas such as biotech, food processing, farming, agrotech, tourism, hospitality, clean energy, healthcare and infrastructure.

The governor, who represents American show business, has shown interest in India’s entertainment industry," Jaswa said. Many of California’s Ivy League Universities are looking at recruiting more students from India and are also likely to participate in the delegation. Besides, TiE, which is an organization for Indian entrepreneurs globally, other Indian American groups like American Associations of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPIO) and Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) are also being roped in to join Arny’s 60-100 member team.

"The trade mission will explore business opportunities and interact with business and political leaders. It will not just be a photo-op. The governor may perhaps be better known as movie stars, but he is also a real estate entrepreneur. He has been an early supporter of India. It is a little known fact that the first unsolicited check (for $50,000) that we receive during our Gujrat earthquake fundraiser in California in 2000 was from him. His wife Maria Shriver, who’s John F Kennedy’s niece, was in India recently amd her first visit set the stage for next year’s trade mission," Jaswa said.
