Diabetes is pretty soon going to bite one third of all Americans. I am not counting the impact on the remaining part of the world. Those with diabetes mellitus either cannot produce the required insulin or the insulin they will produce in anyway will prove to be useless in stimulating the uptake of blood sugar or glucose into body’s cells.
Diabetes Exercise & Sport Association (DESA) was established in 1985 with one of
missions to "create opportunities for those with diabetes to participate in a broad range of recreational, sport and athletic activities" among others.
The Diabetes Exercise & Sport Association (DESA) lists the "Top Ten Reasons To Become A DESA Member":
10. I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes and need to connect with resources to help me achieve my athletic goals.
9. The best friends in my life are DESA members I have come to know through DESA activities and conferences.
8. DESA conferences are an opportunity for me to meet leaders in the field of diabetes research and heath care professional to learn the latest development in exercise related subjects, diabetes equipment and supplies.
7. The DESA quarterly newsletter, The Challenge, is a quality publication of timely and useful information on diabetes control through exercise.
6. I want to have dialogue with others facing the same challenges as I do and the DESA Online Forum is a great opportunity to do this.
5. I want to get started on an exercise program and receive encouragement to "stick with it" from DESA and its members.
4. I want to become active in advancing the DESA mission. My membership decision is an important step in doing this.
3. DESA has supported and helped people with diabetes from around the globe by establishing DESA Canada and DESA Europe to address the need for exercise knowledge and support among people with diabetes. Many of our members are just starting an exercise program, while others have succeeded at levels that most only dream of, including climbing Mt. Everest, biking across the United States, and enduring extreme sport activities and marathons.
2. We are the leading international nonprofit diabetes organization dedicated to diabetes health, wellness and prevention through exercise.
